Seizing the moment in Vaccination Response

The UK is set to approve Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine within days and the US FDA is reviewing the Moderna Vaccine in two weeks.

Their are some critical pieces that need to be prioritised in tech product roadmaps especially as related to mobile contact tracing apps, which in some countries now have national reach, to help vaccine uptake.

On the Citizen & Resident side:

1 — Notification features with deep content links — to enable health services to communicate the effectiveness and importance of getting a vaccine. Vaccine hesitancy is one of the top continued threats to public health and this was even prior to COVID-19.

2 — Ability of a user to find the closest vaccination site < 10 minute walking distance, this will ensure equitable vaccination uptake.

3 — Booking an appointment quickly and effectively (< 3 steps). Barriers to successfully booking an appointment have caused delays in immunisation historically.

4 —Enabling residents to confirm they have had a vaccine — this can be via QR code within an app experience.

5— A ‘passport’ that will communicate ‘immunity certification’ to other hardware such as to events POS, businesses and travel.

6— Dashboards and analytics, which will empower residents to map vaccine uptake and give rise to new ‘mental models’ for travel, work and education.
